For the No. 6 seed, the first week of a Grand Slam tennis tournament is a matter of finding a way through. “It’s about surviving,” said Roddick when asked whether he’ll tinker with his game. “It’s giving yourself a chance to play another day. I’ve gotten through enough first weeks now where I know how to manage my way through.” Roddick, the 2003 U.S. Open champion, enters his third- round night match against 29th-seeded German Kohlschreiber with the aim of bettering his three semifinal appearances at the tournament. Defending champion Roger Federer, who beat him last year, is on the other side of the draw this time. After helping the U.S. clinch its 32nd Davis Cup title in December, Roddick warmed up for the Australian Open by winning the Kooyong Classic exhibition event for a third straight year. Kohlschreiber also carried winning form into Melbourne Park by claiming his second career ATP Tour title in Auckland, a victory that lifted his ranking to a career-high 27. “I’ve worked hard and I’ve had a great preparation for this tournament,” Kohlschreiber, 24, told reporters. “Hopefully I can go a long way.” Kohlschreiber was ranked 102nd when he last met Roddick.
